Registering for TOEFL/IELTS/GMAT/GRE in Turkey: Practical Steps
April 22, 2025
Registering for standardized tests like TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, GMAT, or GRE is a crucial step in your international application journey. Understanding the specific procedures for test-takers in Turkey can save time and prevent potential issues. This guide outlines the practical steps involved, and how PrimoEd assists during the 'Diagnosis' and 'Dispatch' phases of our 8-D Approach.
Step 1: Identify the Required Test(s)
Before registering, confirm exactly which tests are required or recommended by your target universities and programs. Requirements vary significantly. Check university admission websites or consult with PrimoEd during the 'Direction' phase.
- English Proficiency: Usually TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic. Some universities accept PTE Academic or others.
- Graduate Admissions (Business): Often GMAT, though some accept GRE.
- Graduate Admissions (Non-Business): Typically GRE General Test.
- Undergraduate Admissions (US): SAT or ACT (check test-optional policies).
Step 2: Choose the Right Test Version
TOEFL iBT: Offered at authorized test centers in major Turkish cities (Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, etc.) and also has a Home Edition option.
IELTS Academic: Available in Paper-based and Computer-delivered formats at official test centers (British Council, IDP). IELTS Online is also an option.
GMAT: Primarily offered at Pearson VUE test centers. An online version (GMAT Online) is also available.
GRE General Test: Offered at authorized test centers and has an At Home option.
PrimoEd Insight: We advise on the best version based on your location, preferences (computer vs. paper), and target university requirements.
Step 3: Create an Account on the Official Test Website
You'll need to create an account directly on the official website for the test you're taking:
- TOEFL: ETS website (ets.org)
- IELTS: British Council or IDP IELTS websites (depending on the center).
- GMAT: MBA.com (official GMAT website)
- GRE: ETS website (ets.org)
- SAT: College Board website (collegeboard.org)
- ACT: ACT website (act.org)
Use your official name as it appears on your passport and ensure all personal details are accurate.
Step 4: Find Test Centers and Dates in Turkey
Use the official test websites to search for available test centers and dates in Turkey. Major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir typically have multiple centers and frequent test dates. Smaller cities may have fewer options. Book well in advance, especially during peak application seasons, as spots fill up quickly.
PrimoEd Support: We can assist you in finding convenient test centers and dates based on your location and timeline during the 'Dispatch' phase.
Step 5: Register and Pay the Test Fee
Follow the online registration process on the official website. You will need to select your test date, time, and center (or choose the home/online version if applicable). Payment is typically required via credit card. Fees vary by test and are subject to change.
Important Note for Turkey: Ensure your credit card is enabled for international transactions. Some Turkish banks may have restrictions.
Step 6: Sending Scores to Universities
Most universities require official score reports sent directly from the testing organization (ETS, College Board, GMAC, etc.).
During Registration: You can usually designate several institutions (often 4-5) to receive your scores for free when you register. Do this carefully using the correct institutional codes provided by the universities.
After the Test: You can send scores to additional institutions later for a fee via your online test account.
PrimoEd Assistance: As part of the 'Dispatch' phase, we help you compile the correct institutional codes and manage the score-sending process to ensure timely delivery to all your target universities.
Test Day Preparation (Practical Tips for Turkey)
ID Requirements: Bring your valid passport as identification. Check the specific ID requirements for your test center in Turkey.
Location & Timing: Know the exact location of the test center and plan your travel time, considering potential traffic in major cities.
Permitted Items: Be aware of what you can and cannot bring into the testing room.
